- Distance: 7.5 miles
- Elevation Gain: 1700 feet
- Rating: Strenuous
- Start/Finish: Diablo Valley Overlook
Description
This hike starts and finishes at Diablo Valley Overlook, adjacent to Laurel Nook Picnic Area. From the picnic area, follow the Juniper Trail for about 1 mile and 700 feet of elevation gain, to Mount Diablo summit. After taking in the views at the summit, it's time to start the Grand Loop. The Grand Loop is a 7 mile trail that fully circumnavigates the peak, and provides great views of Eagle Peak and North Peak.
Start by following the North Peak trail from the summit. That trail will descend sharply for approximately 3 miles and 1700 feet of elevation loss. It will cross two saddles and eventually merge with Eagle Peak trail. The trail flattens out at Deer Flat, and from there it's a steady climb with 1000 feet of elevation gain back up to Diablo Valley Overlook, with spectacular westward views.
